By Philip Bunting
Mopoke loves peace and quiet. He is about to find out that you can’t always get what you want.
This joyful tale has minimal text but plenty of humour. The simplicity of the text is matched by the wonderfully bold illustrations. There is a flavour of the Jon Klasson hat classics - simple structure and good humour.
Not only do you get to meet a mopoke, but also a highpoke, a lowpoke, a weepoke, a glopoke, a poshpoke, a poorpoke, a yo-poke, a mo’poke, a ‘fropoke, a snowpoke, a glowpoke, a slowpoke, a blowpoke, and some assorted others. And for something completely different there’s a wombat.
If this book doesn’t bring a smile to your face you’re in need of help.
‘Mopoke is the Australian nickname for the Southern Boobook, our smallest and most common species of owl. Mopokes are known for their love of peace and quiet, and for their eponymous ‘mo-poke’ call.
If you would like to hear the voice of the Mopoke you can try Morcombe’s Birds of Australia app. It’s a big one so use a wi-fi connection. It costs $30 but it’s a beauty.
