Maira Kalman is an illustrator, an author, and a designer. Her illustrations are bold, full of colour, delight and whimsy. Her writing is simple, direct, with echoes of joy and pathos. She has brevity without loss of depth.
This is a book for the dog lover in your life – it takes an idiosyncratic path through the general characteristics of dogs: funniest, lovingest, loyalest friend, eager playmate, fresh air companion, your anchor, your pride, your muse, your personal trainer, your baby, your antidepressant, your family, your solace, your saviour, your pal. Takes a detour into a personal history, takes in some famous people and their dogs, runs over a body of Kalman’s work that incorporates dogs and finishes with a thank you.
There is laughter and joy in here – along with colour and life, with a few side lines into sadness.
I had not been aware of Kalman’s work before this but now I am a convert. She illustrates kids books as well wonderful things for adults.
